Longevity & AgingThe Saturated Fat Science Was Incomplete — C15 May Change Everything
For decades, saturated fat was treated as a single enemy of health. But researchers now argue that not all saturated fats behave the same. C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid), an odd-chain saturated fatty acid found in small amounts in certain dairy and fish, is emerging as a potential longevity-supporting nutrient. Discovered through studies of aging Navy dolphins, C15 appears to strengthen cell membranes, support mitochondrial function, reduce inflammation, and influence cellular metabolism. Unlike even-chain saturated fats like palmitic acid (C16), which are associated with poor health outcomes, C15 shows consistently positive associations in research. Scientists now classify it as a candidate essential fatty acid and possible geroprotector — meaning it may support multiple biological systems involved in healthy aging rather than targeting a single disease pathway.
